Study in Psalm 119:57-64 ח Heth

The 8th letter of the Hebrew Aleph-Bet

Heth

ח

The Letter of Life and light

V57 - The Lord is my portion, I promise to keep your words

  • The answer to all temptations, "The lord is my portion " The answer to all worries, "The Lord is my portion" I promise to keep Your word , Your promises , Your truth

  • “The psalmist is saying that, like the Levites, he wants his portion of divine blessing to be God himself since nothing is better and nothing will ever fully satisfy his or anyone else’s heart but God himself. To possess God is truly to have everything.” (Boice)

  • “He is an exceedingly covetous fellow to whom God is not sufficient; and he is an exceeding fool to whom the world is sufficient. For God is an inexhaustible treasury of all riches, sufficing innumerable men; while the world has mere trifles and fascinations to offer, and leads the soul into deep and sorrowful poverty.” (Thomas Le Blanc, cited in Spurgeon)

V58 - I entreat Your favour with all of my heart, be gracious to me according to Your word.

  • I beg the Lord to show me favour according to His grace through Jesus. To show me favour according to the promises in His word.

  • The words translated Your favour are literally, “Your face.” To enjoy the face of God is to experience His favour. The psalmist here declares that he has sought the face of God. He sought the face of God with a sense of urgency, reflected in the words entreated and whole heart. The psalmist understood how important it was to seek the favour of God and to please Him with his life. He sought the face of God with a sense of inability, shown in the request be merciful to me. No matter how diligently the psalmist would seek after God and seek to please Him, he would always remain in need of mercy. (Guzik)

V59 - When I think of my ways, I turn my feet to your decrees

  • When I think of my sinful life, the only hope is to turn to God and His ways and His wonderful grace show to us through Jesus Christ our Lord.

  • It is a daily renewal of grace , daily I have to turn to the cross.

  • “While studying the word he was led to study his own life, and this caused a mighty revolution. He came to the word, and then he came to himself, and this made him arise and go to his father.” (Spurgeon)

  • “How many, on the other hand, seem to pass through the world into eternity without a serious thought on their ways! Multitudes live for the world – forget God and die! This is their history.” (Bridges)

V60 - I hasten and do not delay to keep your commandments

  • When I think of my sinful ways I rush to the Lord , I hasten to follow Your commandments

  • “Speed in repentance and speed in obedience are two excellent things. We are too often in haste to sin; O that we may be in a greater hurry to obey.” (Spurgeon)

V61 - Though the cords of the wicked ensnare me , I do not forget Your law.

  • Even in persecution I will not forget Your law, "Bless those wo hate you"

  • But to continue steadfast in obedience to the divine law , come what may, is evidence of true piety .(Calvin)

V62 - At midnight I rise to praise You, because of Your righteous law

  • The ungodly would fear God's righteous judgment, but not I , I will rise in body and spirit to praise God for His righteous judgement.

  • The Psalmist observed posture; he did not lie in bed and praise. There is not much in the position of the body, but there is something, and that something is to be observed whenever it is helpful to devotion and expressive of our diligence or humility.” (Spurgeon)

  • He showed great reverence to God even in secret devotion, by rising up to praise Him. Praise requires something of both soul and body. His devotion to God was sincere, shown by its secrecy. He was willing to thank God when no one else could see him or be impressed by his devotion. (Guzik)

V63 - I am a companion of those who fear you, of those who keep Your precepts

  • I am not alone , I am part of His church the bride of Christ, His people!

John 17: 20-26

20 “My prayer is not for them alone. I pray also for those who will believe in me through their message, 21 that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you. May they also be in us so that the world may believe that you have sent me. 22 I have given them the glory that you gave me, that they may be one as we are one— 23 I in them and you in me—so that they may be brought to complete unity. Then the world will know that you sent me and have loved them even as you have loved me.

24 “Father, I want those you have given me to be with me where I am, and to see my glory, the glory you have given me because you loved me before the creation of the world.

25 “Righteous Father, though the world does not know you, I know you, and they know that you have sent me. 26 I have made you[e] known to them, and will continue to make you known in order that the love you have for me may be in them and that I myself may be in them.”

  • “If then we are not ashamed to confess ourselves Christians, let us not shrink from walking in fellowship with Christians. Even if they should exhibit some repulsive features of character, they bear the image of him, whom we profess to love.” (Bridges)

V64 - The earth is full of your steadfast love, teach me your statues.

  • The creation is full of the Lord's wonder and Glory. Everything we have , even the air we breath is from His grace.

Oh Lord thank you for your love and grace, revealed to us by our Lord and savoir Jesus Christ! Thank you for being all that we need and filling us with your spirit. How wonderful it is the more we seek after you the closer you draw near to us and the closer You are Lord the more our lives are fulfilled and blesses by your holy presence, we are sinful Lord and the flesh is week grant us the grace we so desperately need every day to sustain us. All Glory to God the father.
