Give sacrificially. Jesus made the point many times in many ways. In the Sermon on the Plain, he exhorted a large multitude: “Give, and it will be given to you. Good measure, pressed down, shaken together, running over, will be put into your lap. For with the measure you use it will be measured back to you” (Luke 6:38).
In the Sermon on the Mount, he likewise cautioned: “Do not lay up for yourselves treasures on earth, where moth and rust destroy and where thieves break in and steal, but lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust destroys and where thieves do not break in and steal. For where your treasure is, there your heart will be also” (Matt. 6:19–21). These words ought to haunt every reader with a job—
